LEGO Education Renewable Energy Set, available for pre-order

Renewable Energy Add-On Set (9688) here referred before [1, 2], is now available for pre-order from LEGO Education US Website.



Indicated price is $99,95 and it is expected to ship by Fall 2010.

Good source for new NXT/LPF parts and  some wind blades.

Considering it has so many new and specialised parts (solar panel, motor and measuring device), I don't think that's that expensive. Anyway, if you're looking for a particular piece of the set, BrickLink shouldn't take long to have it for sale for a lower price than the full set. ;)

Nice!! How much energy do you think you can generate with that solar panel? I'm afraid it won't be enough for a PF motor. Wondering if you could connect several in parallel and do some sort of self-powered LEGO vehicle :p

As far as I've tested with the old version of the solar panel, you can connect several in parallel, to increase current and power.

The power generated depends a lot on the amount of solar light and incidence angle. At natural sun light in a sunny day you can easily generate enough power to run one PF motor. However don't expect much performance as current is low and torque can't increase too much without stopping the motor.

This panel is reported to be able to function also a sensor for NXT.
At this point I'm convinced the new panels will have an NXT plug instead of a LPF connector.
It doesn't mean whoever it won't be possible to connect them to PF motors with the proper conversion cable.

I don't think so. The generator is also supposed to be connectable to the NXT and clearly it has a PF connector. Either you will have to use a converter cable, or (as I believe) you'll be able to connect them to NXT only through the meter device.

Maybe you are right.

In fact the actual images are quite preliminar and don't seem there was a concern to connect everything or even to connect the components correctly, so that we can take consistent conclusions from these.

We will see...

Hmm. This would be really fun to play around with. I've been playing with the older solar panels and capacitors the last few days, and it's whetted my appetite for more.

How many of the new solar panels would be required to charge a NXT-lithium battery.:-)

I think its great, buy one pack and on bricklink more solar panels. Make a solar car, or use the outputs of the rc thing as inputs, than you can switch remotely between a good sorce of energy or a bad one...XD
