Today TBs is going to show you an article about the The LEGO Technic market and design process, published at LEGO LIFE - The LEGO magazine for the employees.
It is an issue with a bit more than two years (Sep.2008), but still very actual and is worth reading.
The article is divided into two parts.
- The first mainly focused on the market topics and challenges, by Per Hjuler (VP and executive responsible for the product line) where the three core concepts behind LEGO Technic are explained: Authenticity, Functionality and Challenging building (The AFC strategy).
- And a second part with an inside view, dedicated to the Top-secret meetings at the Tech House. The place where the Designers have a weekly meeting under Ricco's lead, to discuss the progress on the products they are designing for us, and which will hit the shelves one or two years ahead.
Enjoy the strongly informative reading!

It's always nice if we (the AFOL's) are informed about the do's, don't-s and ways of the work of the design-team. But i've said it before and i will say it again: by talking and formost good listening to people of TLC you will learn much more.
But it is nice to see that Technic is on it's way up again.
Then again i would have love to see the complete development of a model! (Even if it's was of a model that was 5 or 10 years old..)
@Hans,
Ok, lets say this is more for those who didn't have the privilege of a closer contact. ;)
This quote jumped out at me: "The designers scrutinize three posters on the end wall displaying all LEGO Technic products over the years." How do I get these posters?!? I think there are a lot of us who would love to hang them in our Technic building areas.
Well, if they want to expand the number of Lego Technic sales in the USA, they should market American car models like "Crowkillers" (Paul Boratko) builds. The 8297 Off Roader 2 model was a good start. If TLG marketed a Lego Technic MONSTER TRUCK, sales would be really good!
I decent monster truck (or supercar) that's 4x4x4 with new low friction/heavy duty wheel hubs and gearbox parts, motorised with a new powerful and high rpm motor and awesome, authentic suspention would be awesome for the american market, and also for me! It's all about the new parts guys! ones that will really make an impact, such as longer pneumatics and powerful, high volume output compressors for some seriously cool, authentic, powerful and functional sets.
